I lost 1 drive and my media card readers. Put both disks into an external caddy, they read fine from Windows/Linux, and from friends' PCs. 8. Its an i5-4590 on an ASRock H97M Pro 4. I doubt that really means much, since yours is Intel and mine is AMD, and any power is coming from the PSU, so I don't see how it could be a All Rights Reserved. I installed Windows 7 home premium 64-bit on a new Asus motherboard with an Intel Z97 chipset. I have a couple of hard drives and a couple of RAID's connected by eSATA. And for some volumes in fixed internal disks Windows will ask me what I want to do with removable drives after assigning a letter. EDIT: That said, SATA cables have been known to be dodgy in the past. Without this, you'd have to reflash the BIOS every time you installed a new OS.Aside from that, you may have luck screwing around with sleep settings in the BIOS.
I'll agree that the HDD in the caddy slot would probably need more power at boot-time, which (according to Harry) is when Windows would TRY to initialize all internal devices at I built this thing to last....and last it has. 7 years. Its especially common in 'cheap' psu's that dont do discrete rails for each header, simplistically one run thats split off the cable for the mobo & all connectors. WTF, mate?
It at least survives a short term sleep. Sometimes going from UEFI to Legacy mode, reboot, switching back to UEFI and rebooting again clears a lot of issues with HDD recognition on start-up... I did all the usual stuff. I swapped cables, swapped drives, etc. I even RMA'd the motherboard when I got desperate, thinking there was an issue with the drive controller. Disabling sleep in Windows 10 seems to make it stop... But make sure - what is the nominal power consumption for the hdd in the caddy? If that drive is new, I'd exchange it, if not sounds like belly up time. This seems to happen more when the computer goes into sleep.
