I have a 3-4 year old Emachine T6412, 2.2 Ghz AMD-64, 1 G RAM so nothing special or particularly fast. You already have lots of ideas to try, when bootup starts to lag it usually points to as omething that is not loading as it should, ie corrupt program, App, software I have narrowed it down to the RAM.
