What helped you speed up the Windows shutdown process? Update and restart. For about the last two months my laptop is taking forever to shut down. Doing to leave it "uploading" while I'm at work for a few hours and see where we stand this afternoon.

But monitoring your HDD or SSD, to act when their death becomes likely, is a first step. May be a background application or any process is the reason behind delay in shutdown. I decided to check BIOS, and then give up, return it, purchase a used one with Windows 7. I have restarted the laptop numeorus time over this span and it works just fine. I also have a new laptop with Win 8 installed that had me hovering over the wall socket switch for nearly a minute until it finally shut down.

It cannot fully start, except if a forced Shut Down, by holding down the Power Button, is initiated. I have never seen these options before.

NOTE - Make sure you disable service that are not necessary for startup, otherwise your computer might not start after reboot. Windows 8 is probably very good for a touch screen, but I've never been a fan of those, so I'll just stick with 7 as long as I can. Cheers for that!!!!. Any ideas? Swith the primary startup device to cd/dvd, save and exit. On that screen there is another System and Security heading. his comment is here Turns out, all I needed to do was go to Microsoft Fix It and well it fixed the issue and all the updates are working.
