I resolved the USB driver issue with greg's Hardware Identification tip (thanks). Red = not so good and there are usually clues to the cause. This problem I thought was a fluke at first, but we have had about 8 computers come through our shop in the last week with the same issue. In the utilities I do use that contain a registry cleaner I always disable it from auto running.
The laptop was working fine fast and well i downloaded games such as mmo's grand chase and i played that and it ran really well no problems. Meanwhile, my Ubuntu Linux machine (upon which I'm writing this message) continues to hum along happily.
