A lot of those updates were useless applications, like Live Messenger, …. (useless to me, at least). I'll give it a year or so - until the first major patch. I double checked what you described, and it was not there. Cant believe microsoft didnt think all the way through when changing update policies. Again uninstalling and reinstalling latest version (from phone manufacturer) did not help. It stops it appearing in Device Manager, driver installers can't detect the device, Windows Update can't detect it, no way to manually install the drivers using Group Policy Editor.
